First Love – Offbeat

Verse 1

I met my first love when I was only a kid
She used to come over every day to play at my crib
From the moment that we met, I was struck by Cupid
And the object of my affection’s name was “Music”
We grew up together and were teenage sweethearts
But as we matured she became more street smart
She stopped singing about things like love and fun
And started rapping about things like drugs and guns
My parents got concerned that she would lead me astray
But no matter what they’d say they couldn’t keep me away
I went from listening to her lyrics and liking her flow
To staying at home writing and reciting my own
The love I felt for Music couldn’t have been truer
I was ready to devote the rest of my life to her
But things don’t always go the way you planned at the start
– And as the years passed we slowly drifted apart
I got a job and liked the lifestyle it afforded me
I knew she’d never give me that kinda security
So even though it truly broke my heart at the time
I turned my back on that first love of mine

A couple years passed and I dated around
But nothing came close to the first love that I found
I had few relationships which were significant
Graphic Design and Fitness were two in particular
They were fun while they lasted but I knew back then
We were only ever destined to end up as friends
– It took me until I reached my mid twenties
Before my next big love would make her entry
My friend introduced to this girl that he knew
He said “She’s rich and ambitious man she’s perfect for you”
I resisted at first, but my friend insisted
Business meet Oli, Oli meet Business
It was love at first sight, and I wanted to be with her so much
I was staying at the office every night
My family approved of her and so did my friends
Plus she gave me the security on which I depend
We got married in 2012 and I felt genuinely happy
– At least that’s what I would tell myself
But inside I felt guilty coz I was aware
That when it came to my first love, she didn’t compare

Me and Business had a good couple of years
But after a while the cracks began to appear
To everyone on the outside things looked fine
But the love that I had for her began to decline
I was out drinking one night and trying to forget
At a bar where a band were performing a set
I didn’t think much when they stepped on the stage
– But something strange happened when they started to play…
A figure manifested I instantly recognised
And there stood Music right in front of my eyes
I hadn’t seen her for a decade, and there she was
Looking as beautiful as ever – she hadn’t aged a day
She came towards me and ran her hands through my hair
I was speechless all I could do was stand and stare
Coz the moment that she touched me I felt passion inside
The likes of which I’d not felt for a very long time
She said “Did you miss me?” as she looked in my eyes
– And I replied “Not a single day goes by”
And by the time the band had finished their first song
I was reminded why my first love was so strong

Since Music and I shared our brief encounter
No matter what I tried I couldn’t stop thinking about her
During the day I’d spend time at work with Business
But come 5 I’d run home to be with my mistress
I tried keeping them separate but to no avail
Writing lyrics at my desk, pretending they’re emails
Sneaking out at nighttime to shows to go watch her
Hiding stamps on my hands like lipstick on my collar
I tried to maintain a wife and lover
Because despite it all I didn’t want Business to suffer
But the more I saw Music the harder it seemed
Until it reached breaking point and I had to come clean
“Business, I’m sorry – you’ve been good to me
But I’ve got to be with Music she’s the girl of my dreams”
She said “I put food on your plate and clothes on your back
After everything I’ve done, this is how you say thanks?
I can’t believe you’d up and leave me just like that
Especially to be with that tramp
You know she’ll chew you up and spit you out like she always does”
I said “You’re probably right, but she’s still my first love.”
